Do You Need Braces or Orthodontics In Reading?

Braces are the most common form of orthodontics in Reading. While you might be wondering if your children need braces, it’s important to consider if you need them yourself. Adult braces are more common than you think, even if they are typically associated with children and teenagers. The good news is that modern braces can be practically invisible, so there’s no need for your kids – or indeed you – to be worried about being a “brace face”. Here’s how you can tell if anyone in your family needs orthodontics in Reading. The two most common are crowding and bites.

Orthodontics in Reading

Crowding

As the name implies, crowding is when teeth are too close together. A common sign of crowded teeth is being unable to floss properly because the floss doesn’t fit between the teeth. Crowding is the most common cause for needing braces. It causes teeth to push out beyond the teeth next to them and causes some teeth to overlap each other. In extreme cases of crowding teeth can actually be pushed sideways. Orthodontics in Reading will use the term “malocclusion” to refer to crooked and crowded teeth. A malocclusion can be caused by a mouth that is too small to fully contain teeth, and it can affect adults as a result of wisdom teeth pushing too.

Another issue related to crowding is when there are missing teeth or teeth that are too small to fill an entire mouth. This causes gaps to appear between the teeth and it’s a problem that affects both children and adults. This is just one more issue that orthodontics in Reading can correct.

Bites

Bites are the other common problem that orthodontics in Reading can correct. This includes open bites, overbites, underbites and crossbites. Bite problems occur when your upper and lower teeth are misaligned as you bite down, which is where the name comes from. Your teeth should fit together without any large gaps when you bite down. Open bites are when your teeth don’t meet properly and leave a gap. An overbite is when the upper teeth are further than the lower teeth, and an underbite is when the bottom teeth reach past the upper teeth. A crossbite is caused when teeth from the upper jaw actually bite inside the lower teeth. This problem is caused by both jaws being misaligned and is different from an underbite.

Other Signs you Need Orthodontics in Reading

There are some other signs that you may need to consult an orthodontist. This includes pain in the jaw, which is a sign that the jaws are misaligned. If you have crowded teeth it can cause a lisp. Another common sign is halitosis (bad breath). If you find that you get bad breath even though you brush regularly then it could be a sign that food is getting stuck in your teeth, which is a sign of crowding and tooth gaps, both of which require orthodontic intervention to be corrected. If you are worried that you or your child need braces then book yourself in for a consultation with your local orthodontist!
