Do you want to lose weight?
You’re not alone. It’s estimated that 64% of adults in the UK weigh more than their recommended body weight. Did you know that Whoopi Goldberg, Charles Barkley, Elon Musk, and Oprah Winfrey recently used weight-loss injections? Even the rich and famous find it difficult to lose weight.
For years, doctors have been telling their patients to eat less and exercise more. As our medical knowledge has advanced, we know that this advice simply isn’t good enough. The primary cause of obesity is genetics: if we’re genetically programmed to be overweight, we have to go against our own body’s own pre-programmed mechanisms to lose weight and keep it off. It’s no wonder most of us struggle to maintain weight loss.
Other common causes of weight gain include certain illnesses, stress, lack of sleep, and menopause. Some medications can cause weight loss, such as diabetes medications, steroids, and mental health medications. There are other causes of obesity that are currently being researched. Plastic pollution, certain viruses, and bacteria may also be linked to obesity.
Why is it not worth waiting to start treatment?
I’m a general practitioner and have undertaken further studies to become an expert in weight loss (see “About Me” for more information). I’d love to help you on your weight loss journey now. I believe this is such an important issue that you shouldn’t wait until you potentially develop complications of obesity (see “Complications of Obesity”).
I see it every day—because of being overweight, my patients experience difficulty breathing, widespread aches and pains, leg swelling, and skin problems. As a physician, I’m particularly concerned about the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and cancer. I know that obesity can affect self-esteem and even cause depression.
How can we treat obesity?
I will work with you to try to help. When we first meet, I will ask you questions about your medical history and review your overall health to ensure no other conditions are contributing to the problem. If we find other conditions requiring treatment, such as thyroid problems, high blood pressure, high lipids, or high blood sugar, we will treat them.
Depending on your wishes, we will discuss the scope of treatment.
I can provide lifestyle advice on how to lose weight and improve your health without medication. We can discuss diet, underlying health issues that need to be addressed first, and ways to lose weight. Physical activity is also important, but mainly to maintain muscle strength during weight loss.
To be considered for medication, you must meet certain conditions:

– You must have a BMI of 30 or greater, or a BMI of at least 27 with a weight-related health problem (see the section on complications of obesity for details). (Please include a link to a BMI calculator for patients)
