| During the consultation and specialist ultrasound scan, the ENZIAN classification system will be used to provide a structured assessment of the location and extent of endometriosis. This internationally recognised classification helps to accurately map the disease, document the areas affected and support appropriate treatment and surgical planning where required. Superficial endometriosis (small deposits on the surface of pelvic organs or peritoneum) cannot usually be seen on ultrasound. Therefore, a normal specialist ultrasound does not completely exclude endometriosis. However, specialist ultrasound is highly valuable for detecting and assessing deep endometriosis and guiding further management. | |
| The endometriosis mapping scan includes assessment of: • Ovaries (endometriomas) • Uterus (including adenomyosis) • Bladder • Ureters and hydronephrosis • Rectovaginal septum • Uterosacral ligaments • Rectum and sigmoid colon • Pouch of Douglas • Deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE), where present | |
